Before your scrap car leaves: a seller checklist

Gather ownership documents first

Check that the vehicle is registered to you and that you can produce the registration. ICBC recommends having the signed registration available when selling a used vehicle. If a document is missing, or the owner is someone else, ask an Autoplan broker about the steps required. Calling a car scrap does not remove the need to establish who can sell it.

Check the inside without rushing

Look through the glovebox, door pockets, centre console, boot and under the seats for belongings and paperwork. Remove anything that identifies you or another person that does not need to go with the vehicle. If the car has saved phone contacts or navigation destinations, check the manufacturer instructions for removing that data when the vehicle can be powered safely.

Describe collection access honestly

Tell the buyer where the car is, whether it rolls, whether the keys are available and what blocks access. A locked parking area or low-clearance garage can affect the collection arrangements. Do not attempt to move an unsafe vehicle just to make the pickup look simpler. Explain the situation so it can be discussed before a truck arrives.

Keep a record after the car goes

Confirm the sale amount and the handover arrangements before collection. Keep copies of the completed sale documents. ICBC advises removing your plates and taking the registration and transfer paperwork to an Autoplan broker; going with the buyer is strongly recommended.
